Influences from all over the world The Bauhaus incorporated significant influences from international scenes, both in terms of the teaching program and the buildings, as well as in the lives of teachers and students. The founder Walter Gropius, for instance, aligned the school with certain traditions, and incorporated suggestions from English artists John Ruskin and William Morris when developing the teaching program. The combination of arts and crafts in the movement founded by Morris played an important role in the first years of the Bauhaus in particular. The Bauhaus was an art school that was radical in its uniting of art, craft, and technology in the years following the World War I. Its main goal was to improve people's living conditions through modern design. Founded in Weimar in 1919 by architect Walter Gropius, the Bauhaus moved to Dessau in 1925.
The faculty flatly refused to work with the Nazis, and rather than cooperate with them, the school was closed in 1933 by the faculty’s vote. Mies van der Rohe’s solution to Nazi intervention in the school was to move it to an empty telephone factory in Berlin and designate it a private institution. But the National Socialists continued to harass the school, attacking what the Nazis perceived as a Soviet Communist ideology and demanding that Nazi sympathizers replace select faculty members.
Even before the Nazis came to power, political pressure on the Bauhaus school had increased. The Nazi movement, from nearly the start, denounced the Bauhaus for its "degenerate art" and left-wing political views. Dejected, but not defeated, Varanese accepted a job as executive chef at the Cardinal Club while he searched for the perfect situation for his restaurant. In 2007, he opened his eponymous restaurant Varanese on Frankfort Avenue at the site of the old Red Lounge at 2106 Frankfort Ave. But he still hadn’t gotten that empty storage facility on River Road out of his system. In 2011, after four and a half years of success at Varanese, the young chef decided to make a play for his first love. But even with the reputation he had established by then, it was still a struggle to finance the $4 million project.

Varanese’s Kentucky and South Carolina roots are apparent in the menu at the River House. The chef sought to keep the menu balanced, but it is really the seafood that is the star of this establishment. The Raw Bar offers the River Tower with king crab legs (pictured on the cover). He got his start in the culinary business at a little mom-and-pop restaurant in his native Cleveland. By the time he was 16 he felt he could run the kitchen better than the adults around him. His next stop was Johnson & Wales University, when it was in Charleston, South Carolina, where he obtained a BA in food service management and AS in culinary arts. During his tenure in culinary school, Varanese worked as kitchen manager for Magnolias, an upscale Southern restaurant in Charleston. Varanese also wants to add more boat slips so he can serve more water traffic. Varanese admits that he sometimes feels as if he is juggling too many balls in the air at once. For the moment, he is merely overseeing the management at his namesake restaurant. Most of his staff there have been with him for years, and he’s depending on them to get him through this rough period.

The dish includes a pound of chilled lobster, jumbo shrimp, oysters on a half shell, and colossal lumps of crab and mussels.
This is very unique as in LA you have specific studios or you have specific live theatres, not both. The stage is enormous (one of the largest in the world) and you will have a chance to walk across it during your tour. The main room is high-class – with balconied sections and plush carpet and seats. You will have a chance to sit in the front row during your tour and there may be large photos in the seats indicating where celebs sat down during the latest Oscar Awards. The total seating is under 1300 which when compared to the nearby 17,000 seat Hollywood Bowl, is quite small. In addition all seats are less than 100 feet from the stage which if you’ve been to the Hollywood Bowl you know about the “nosebleed” seats, hundreds of feet from the stage! You can actually see the Ford Amphitheatre from some of the higher seating at the Hollywood Bowl. The museum now spans 100,000 square feet of exhibits, 25 galleries, and over 300 vehicles in its collection. Colonel J. Griffith donates nearly five square miles of land near his ranch to the people of Los Angeles. Today, Griffith Park spans 4,210 acres of natural chapparal-covered terrain and landscaped parkland between Hollywood and the San Fernando Valley. It's one of the largest municipal parks with urban wilderness areas in the United States.

And there is a nice display of characters from THE WIZARD OF OZ, which you pass on your way inside. Outside, Carly discovers the truck has a broken headlight and realizes it's the same truck from last night. Bo appears heading out returning to his truck where Carly is waiting for Wade. Outside she locks herself in his truck and reveals that she knows he was the man from the camp. Meanwhile inside, Wade finishes using the toilet but soon takes a look around a medical room he discovered while inside the house.
A Trip Through the Hollywood Wax Museum’s Chamber of Horrors
Public telescopes are available for free in the evenings (7pm to 10pm). Be sure to pick up a free brochure on the 1st level – this explains basic history, hours, and includes a detailed map of the property. There are three main levels of the observatory – the lower level contains several excellent constellation exhibits. The mid level also has exhibits and information about the observatory.
There are several “movie characters” hanging around, who are in costume here – be careful for the one that looks like Freddy Kruger leaning against the wall without arms showing and no eyes. However when you walk in front of him he will jump out and wave his plastic knife excitedly – most tourists are completely shocked when this “statue” comes to life in front of them! Highly recommend putting yourself in viewing distance of this character and watch the tourists reactions.

A visit to the museum is a unique opportunity to explore and learn about Hollywood’s earlier history. Take the building for example which is the centerpiece of the museum – this is the original home of Paramount Studios and as a result is Hollywood’s oldest remaining studio building. Hollywood Farmer’s Market is held on Saturday mornings along Vine Street near the corner of Hollywood Blvd, just down from the Capital Records building.
One of the more intriguing exhibits shows the Lizardman and the vampire woman. The Lizardman has spent more than 700 hours under the skilled hands of a tattoo artists and now his body is covered with green scaled tattoos – he spliced his tongue in two, and embedded sub-dermal Teflon implants. The vampire woman has permanent fang implants, titanium horns embedded under her skin and nearly 100% of her body is covered in tattoos.
Copping, who joined the bureau staff a half-decade after the museum closed, said she would be happy to see the sign amended to focus on the new tenant. The museum kept current with celebrities over time, as Kate Winslet and Britney Spears took their places along the likes of Mae West and W.C. So the Los Angeles Times proclaimed the museum when it opened in 1962, offering about 60 sculpted figures that represented the first half-century of cinema. The old sign still looms over Beach Boulevard, a 20th century landmark that, like the museum it once trumpeted, held out past the dawn of multiplexes and YouTube. Remember that cannon that fired upon you from the pirate ship at the beginning?
Museum of Broken Relationships opened in early June 2016 in the building that used to house Fredericks of Hollywood. You wouldn’t recognize the interior now as compared to when this lingerie store was here; the inside has been completely renovated. However one remnant of the old store remains quickly spotted when you walk in the entrance – a star dedicated to founder Mr. Frederick is one of many lining the sidewalks of this part of Hollywood Blvd.
The top floor is an excellent location to look out over the entire Los Angeles basin area and there is also a high powered telescope room. Among the wax replicas on display include those of A-List stars, classic entertainers, and legendary singers (such as Elvis Presley). The museum contains thousands of authentic Hollywood memorabilia including many photos, costumes, movie making equipments and other movie props. There are four floors including the scary basement which focuses on Hollywood horror films. There is even the jail cell corridor that Jodie Foster walked down, Hannibal Lecter’s padded prison cell and his mask used in the movie, The Silence of the Lambs. Today it houses an excellent collection of historical Hollywood items as well as movie memorabilia.
Well, as you approach the exit, you pass through a submarine setting, with figures of Sean Connery from HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER and Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington in CRIMSON TIDE. The Hollywood Wax Museum’s first room contains a ship (complete with running water) manned by both Russell Crowe and Johnny Depp (as Captain Jack Sparrow). Get too close up for a look at the figures, and you may find yourself on the receiving end of a blast from its cannons (a flash of light, some loud noise, and a puff of smoke). This is actually one of the highlights of the museum but for a reason that does not become clear until the end of the tour. I don’t know how true this is, in general, but in my case I had never been inside the Hollywood Wax Museum’s Chamber of Hororrs until I finally made a pilgrimage this week.
